HeartSmart EKG Marks 15th Anniversary

Every custom protective case we make is a unique challenge, but sometimes the stories behind those cases – and their applications – bring extra meaning to a project.

That’s never been more true than when the Max Schewitz Foundation asked us to develop a custom case for portable EKG equipment, used in their HeartSmart EKG program. The case project itself was straightforward: a waterproof, crushproof pelican case with custom-cut foam to hold portable EKG equipment. But, the story behind the case was completely unique.

Recently, we received an email from the foundation reminding us that it was the 15-year anniversary of Max’s passing, and we thought it was a good time to revisit this inspiring story.

In September of 2005, at the age of just 20, Max Schewitz died suddenly from a cardiac arrhythmia related to an undiagnosed heart condition. Max was a young man who lived life to the fullest, and is remembered for his sense of humor, love of pranks and practical jokes, and his wild adventures. Max exuded passion and a contagious enthusiasm that was felt by everyone around him.

In the wake of Max’s passing, his family turned from grief to hope. Max’s condition was treatable, if it had been diagnosed, so his family set off on a mission to save the lives of as many other young people as possible.

They started the Max Schewitz Foundation, which works to screen young people between the ages of 17 and 22 using an EKG that can detect markers for about 60% of the conditions that can cause sudden cardiac death.  To date, the foundation has facilitated the screening of 94,049 hearts using EKGs. While the COVID pandemic has caused the foundation to temporarily pause their screenings, they’re looking forward to being able to resume as soon as they can, safely and responsibly.

As we mark 15 years since Max’s passing, we’re incredibly touched by the generosity and compassion shown by his family. We’ve been honored to play a small part in supporting their important, lifesaving work.
