Decoding the Certification
The acronym, such as ISO or SAE, tells you the name of the organization that has developed the body of standards for a specific industry.
ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization. The ISO develops international standards for products, services and business practices, which are published upon consensus from its global members. These standards ensure that products are safe and reliable. They also give companies a method for constant improvement and help ensure that these companies are consistently meeting their customers’ needs and requirements.
Companies that are certified to ISO’s quality management standards conform to international best practices to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
The numbers that follow the ISO acronym specify the type of management system a company has adopted. The ISO 19011:2011 is a set of guidelines for auditing a quality management system.
SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers International, which publishes standards for engineering professionals in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicles.
The AS prefix is used for Aerospace Quality Standards, and the number following the prefix tells you the name of the specific document in the collection of standards. The AS9101D is the checklist of standards encompassed in the SAE Aerospace Quality Standards.
The AS9120A is a company-level certification based on the standard published by SAE titled, “Quality Management Systems - Requirements for Aviation, Space, and Defense Distributors”.
Pelican-Hardigg, whose products are used and sold by EPS and SCS, also holds a distinction of being certified to ISO 9001:2008. This standard includes a quality management system that focuses on customer service and continual improvement.
